Student enrolment in higher education has seen a visible increase, heartening policymakers and educationists. India now has more than 665 universities, including institutes of national importance, and 35,829 colleges, according to data released by the ministry of human resource development on Wednesday.

The national gross enrolment ratio (GER) in higher education, or the proportion of students in the 18-23 age group pursuing post-secondary education, has risen from 17.27% in 2009-10 to 21.1% in 2012-13. India aims to achieve a 30% GER by 2020.

Though the country has 29.6 million students pursuing higher education, there is concern over low numbers of PhD students and researchers. In 2012-13, fewer than 0.3% of students were enrolled in PhD programmes.
