Pakistan lurches from one economic crisis to another when it is not on a drip of global dole. Its inability to generate sufficient electricity—currently it is facing a huge power crisis—and increase the volume of trade with its neighbours reflects this state.

Yet, on Wednesday, it shot down three agreements during the ongoing Saarc summit in Kathmandu that would have eased its difficulties.

India had pushed hard for agreements on road and rail connectivity and a power grid linking the region. Pakistan claimed that it had internal processes to fulfil before it could ink these deals.

A country does not walk into a summit meeting and then claim it is not ready: It informs the host country well in advance if it is unable to agree. Pakistan came prepared to scuttle what India proposed.

India should sign these deals bilaterally. In fact, it should ink constructive economic plans with all willing Saarc members and just bypass Pakistan.
